Kindling Inter-university Networks for Diverse (KIND) Engineering Faculty Advancement in the California State University (CSU) System

Under an NSF ADVANCE grant, the “Kindling Inter-university Networks for Diverse (KIND) Engineering Faculty Advancement in the California State University (CSU) System.” is established to make systemic changes to increase the representation of women, particularly URM women, and support equity for diverse groups within the CSU engineering professoriate. With collaboration with the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) ASPIRE Institutional Change Network, the KIND Program will use a data-driven self-assessment to identify inequities in faculty recruitment, retention, and advancement and cause systemic change. The three main objectives of the KIND Program are to:

  1. Create a secured faculty advancement dashboard containing demographic data related to faculty hiring, retention, and promotion in engineering colleges across the CSU system. Moreover, use the dashboard to review current policies/practices to identify barriers in the recruitment and retention of women, URM, and the integration of foreign-born/foreign-trained(FB/FT) women faculty. The end goal is for this dashboard to enable review and revision, if necessary, of policies/practices that will effectively recruit, retain, and promote women in the engineering professoriate across the CSU system.
  2. Form a CSU-wide Research Alliance to widen access to resources and expand research networks for women faculty.
  3. Form an inter-campus networking and mentoring program to provide mentoring and networking opportunities, as well as resources for overcoming bias and other career obstacles for all CSU engineering faculty.
